IT Equipment
Computers for the Community
The Computers for the Community scheme aims to provide IT equipment to those who are on low income or buying their first computer. You can gain access to this scheme through Lambeth Family Learning, King's College Uni4U and the Bayrtee Centre or you can apply to Comm-Tech as an individual in need. Through this scheme, individuals can buy the 50£ computers suitable for USB broadband connection with a 20% discount. Computers can be supplied for £40 and are suitable for office work, accessing the internet, listening to music and similar basic functions.
To find out more about what the scheme's computer is capable of, see the FAQ below.
1. What kind of computer is it?
The computer is 500Mhz, has 128Mb RAM and 6 gig storage. It comes with a keyboard, mouse and monitor and has a CD Rom and floppy drive.
2. What can I do on the computer?
You can move and copy files, play CDs or mp3s, do office work, connect to broadband internet and play older games.
3. What software does it come with?
We can not provide a copy of Microsoft Windows, which is the most common operating system. Instead the computers come with a different operating system, called Linux. We will also install Open Office which looks very similar to Word and the programmes you have used on Miscosoft Office. OpenOffice is compatible with Microsoft Office.
4. Can I put Microsoft Windows on the computer?
If you obtain a copy of Windows 98, you can install this on your machine and use it instead of Linux.
5. What if something goes wrong with the computer?
The computer has a 3 month guarantee, so if something goes wrong, you can bring it back to our workshop and get a repair or replacement free of charge.
We also have more expensive computers with more features. These ususally range from £60- £100. You can speak to our staff about which computer best suits your needs.
